53 Residences
Located along Arlington between Boylston and Newbury St, this legendary 1927 building has a sense of international style. Formerly known as the Old Ritz, these condos sit above the Taj Hotel. They overlook the Public Garden which is acclaimed for its famous swan boat rides within the park’s pond. The Carlton House was built in 1864 and was originally 5 townhouses. This building was later torn down and converted to 53 condos in 1981. The building has a beautiful roof deck, adorn with greenery and trees, and a perfect view of the Public Garden and Boston Common.
There is a long-standing history regarding Back Bay Development, and the approval and construction of The Carlton House. In 1967 a “Back Bay Development Plan” was prepared for the Boston Redevelopment Authority (now called the Boston Planning & Development Authority). The goal of this plan was to create high rise buildings on every corner facing the Public Garden. The Back Bay residents opposed these plans because of the historical significance of the area and drastic alteration to the neighborhood. The Neighborhood Association of Back Bay coordinated most of the efforts to preserve the neighborhood. Only the Carlton House was allowed to be built, after permits were granted in 1981.
Surrounded by art galleries, boutiques and restaurants, The Carlton House Boston is in the heart of it all. It is close to the Theatre District, historic sites and some of the finest shopping along Newbury Street.
